United Kingdom Extends Methanol Poisoning Advisory Roster with Eleven Nations

Industrial alcohol alert sign

The UK authorities has added 11 further nations to its travel advisory register concerning the threats of industrial alcohol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.

The expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just last month, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, after a number of high-profile cases like the fatal demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Employed?

Methanol is a harmful chemical often utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for drinking.

Although it is generated during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the refining procedure.

However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Government Advice for Travelers

Government representative the minister said that every traveler should know the indicators of toxic alcohol contamination.

"While consuming alcohol abroad, opt for trusted places and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the official said.

"If something appears suspicious, for example a hangover that's way worse than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."
