Rare Scarlet Electrical Discharge Captured in Skies

A group of image specialists based in the island nation have managed to photograph visual evidence of red lightning, among the least common celestial events on Earth, during which bright red bursts appear in the sky.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

This group of artists had originally set out to shoot the Milky Way over the distinctive clay formations in the South Island of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the unusual spectacle.

They thought they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that evening, but their expedition transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” a team member commented.

While reviewing his images for a galaxy composite and realized he had photographed crimson electrical bursts,” the photographer explained. “It was unbelievable – we experienced joyful noises and various reactions in the darkness.”

Understanding Red Sprites

Red sprites are atmospheric energy releases in the upper atmosphere, caused by electrical storms. Differing from traditional lightning that strikes downward to the earth, the phenomena ascend towards the mesospheric region, creating structures that resemble vertical forms, tapered shapes or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a this phenomenon was recorded – accidentally – in that year, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Momentary and Ethereal Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but an individual had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at an occurrence when it took place – an ideal happenstance looking at the right part of the sky and I saw a brief red flash,” he explained.

Seeing the events was a dream for this individual, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It looks like you’re seeing something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … the color is a profound crimson that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to observe.”

Skill-Based and Artistic Mastery

Recording a red sprite requires a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an familiarity with scientific principles and artistic vision, the photographer explained. “It’s a really involved type of photography that’s very rewarding as well.”

A different team member said it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his career. “I witnessed the galactic band glowing above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of illumination danced above a storm at a great distance,” he said.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no other images showing scarlet electrical bursts and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.

“It represented a unique instance when you realize you’re witnessing an event you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
